Madagascar

Madagascar up close

Partner relationships and understanding our supply chains are hugely important to us at Terra Provence. With that in mind, our Managing Director, Victoire Héran, went to Madagascar for two months to meet the producers, cooperatives and exporters who help produce many of the raw materials we offer. Crops and landscapes aside, this trip was a great human experience, allowing us to better understand the on-the-ground realities and challenges faced by those working across these sectors.

Madagascar, a land of aromas and spices

Madagascar is recognised worldwide for the exceptional quality of its vanilla. Its unique terroir allows the production of a vanilla with remarkable organoleptic properties, appreciated for its aromatic richness and complexity.

But to reduce Madagascar to vanilla alone would be to forget the immense diversity of its natural resources. The island is also the birthplace of many of the world's most famous spices and essential oils: ylang ylang, clove, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, vetiver, niaouli, ravintsara, geranium and patchouli. Expertise associated with the cultivation and processing of these raw materials has been developing since the nineteenth century, and is still a core activity for many local communities today.

Meeting our supply chains

From the north of Madagascar to Nosy Bé, via the east of Antananarivo, this trip allowed us to meet the people involved in our organic vetiver, organic ylang ylang, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, ravintsara, niaouli, clove, certified organic vanilla and Fair For Life supply chains. From production plots to cooperatives and exporters, these visits allow us to better understand on-the-ground realities, strengthen our partnerships and ensure close monitoring of the supply chains we offer our clients.
