Vetiver
An industry developed over time
Terra Provence has supported the development of an organic vetiver industry located in the north of Madagascar, on the Amber Mountain, for several years. This project has allowed the cultivated area to be gradually expanded, thanks to the propagation of harvested plants, and the creation of a dedicated nursery.
Today, several hectares are devoted to vetiver cultivation. Some of it is for the production of new plant material, and the other for harvesting the roots used for distillation.
A crop grown entirely by hand
Growing vetiver requires a lot of manual work throughout the process. During the rainy season, plants are pulled up and then split to propagate new plantings.
The planting, nurturing of young plants and maintenance are also carried out manually – drawing on local expertise that is essential to the industry's development.
From root to essential oil
During the dry season, the roots of mature plants are harvested before being washed, dried, cut and distilled on site. By controlling this entire process, from cultivation to distillation, we can monitor the quality of the raw material at each stage of production.
